Where can I find an overview of the available alternatives to animal testing?
Like new approach methodologies (NAMs) and Reduce, Replace and Refine (3R principle) methods?
Hi there,
For the NAMs, there are a few resources to check out:
- Database - EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM), Italy: https://jeodpp.jrc.ec.europa.eu/ftp/jrc-opendata/EURL-ECVAM/datasets/DBALM/LATEST/online/dbalm.html
o Contains alternative methods that have been submitted to EURL ECVAM for validation
o Note: this database is not being kept up to date anymore - Non-Animal Technologies database – Doctors Against Animal Experiments, Germany: https://nat-database.org/
o Contains published methods that do not rely on animal experimentation with links to the publications
- RE-Place database – RE-Place project, Belgium: Database | RE-Place
o Contains a collection of NAMs methods, with contact details of the researchers who developed the method. Mostly focuses on methods developed in Belgium. - Fetal Calf Serum-free Database – 3Rs Centre Utrecht, Netherlands: https://fcs-free.sites.uu.nl/
o Contains an overview of commercially available alternatives to FCS and alternative medium compositions described in literature
Regarding the 3Rs, there are other databases as well:
- Interspecies database: https://interspecies-differences.sites.uu.nl/
o For information on physiology, anatomy and biochemistry of various species, including humans - Humane endpoints: Humane Endpoints
o Contains information on humane endpoints in animal experimentation
For more information on the 3Rs, you can check out the following link from Norecopa, Norway’s 3R platform: Databases and Guidelines about animal research .
