Exploring Academic ATMP Development: Insights from Belgium & Comparisons with the Netherlands

Recently, the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre (KCE) published an exploratory study on the legal and strategic options for academic development of ATMPs in Belgium. The report tackles several key research questions:

:one: Current Landscape & Manufacturing Capacities – What ATMP capacities exist in Belgium today? (Chapters 1 & 2)
:two: Authorization & Legal Challenges – What are the regulatory pathways for ATMPs, and where are the bottlenecks for academia? (Chapter 3)
:three: Alternative Development Models – What are the lessons from academic, non-profit, or socially responsible ATMP initiatives? (Chapter 4)
:four: Future Legal & Strategic Options – How can Belgium support academic ATMPs to ensure patient access to safe, high-quality therapies? (Chapters 5 & 6)

This raises an interesting question: How do these findings compare to the situation in the Netherlands? What are the key similarities and differences between the Belgian and Dutch ATMP landscape?

Would love to hear your insights! Let’s discuss.
